Make your Day Better: Laugh your Way through it!

Sometimes the very best thing—no, the only thing—we can do to face another day, is to laugh at ourselves and share a laugh with others. – Bob Carey, Thetutuproject.com

Adrenalin energizes, fear paralyzes, laughter relaxes.

A smile relaxes the whole face. Laughter relaxes the soul.

Several years ago, a man fell a huge distance sustaining horrific injuries and was rushed to the emergency room.

He was encircled by a team of paramedics whose faces turned grimmer, more solemn and fearful as they examined the extent of his injuries… realizing he was hanging onto life by the thinnest of threads.

Still conscious, he looked up and saw the dark fear etched across the paramedics faces.

And he instinctively knew that their fear-state was not going to increase his chances of survival.

So he used the only tool he had left to live – humor.

When in pre-surgery prep the anesthesiologist asked “Are you allergic to anything?”

He answered: “Yes, I’m allergic to heights!!”

The emergency room erupted with laughter –  the atmosphere of fear dissipated and the paramedics focused on saving the man’s life.

And, against all odds, the man DID survive.

More recently, Bob Carey, an average kinda American guy, a bit overweight and heavy set, started taking photos of himself wearing nothing more than a pink tutu in all sorts of outdoor locations: in a field of cows, hanging from a tree limb or my favorite, walking on the beach.

He started this photo project as a way to cope with his wife’s battle with breast cancer.

When you see the photos, you can’t help but chuckle. The laughter takes you away from the reality of the moment.

Not only did Bob’s wife get a good laugh seeing her tutu-clad husband in crazy settings, she started bringing the photos to the hospital and sharing them with other women, who would laugh with delight forgetting momentarily that they were waiting for chemo treatment at the hospital.

Bob Carey’s wife is now cancer-free and he has published his tutu-clad photos in a book.

All book sale proceeds go to breast cancer organizations that make significant differences for in the lives of women with breast cancer and in the people who love them.

Perhaps your situation is not so dire yet we all can benefit from a good laugh every day.

Here are some simple strategies on cultivating more laughter in your life:

  • Do something silly for your friends or family – their laughter will warm your heart.
  • Make it a point to hang out with your funny colleague or friend regularly for a boost.
  • Scan youtube for funny videos, watch slapstick reruns, a stand-up comedian.
  • Rent a funny movie or read a funny book.

There are so many possibilities, find the several that work best for you and expand your humor toolkit + life span!

I’d love to hear from you – how do you make each day better? Leave a comment and tell me. Please share this post with someone who could do with a smile today, thank you!

I would add that just because your kids are adults and the days of DisneyLand Magic Mountain are gone, it doesn’t mean there is no more fun and laughter as a family. At least once a month my wife and two daughters (22 and 24) spend an evening at a local comedy club. We have so much fun laughing and hanging out and those evenings have brought us much closer together as a unit.

Thanks for posting this! I loved the story about Bob Carey.

      Great point Bill,

getting older and having adult children is no reason to stop having fun!! Its always great to meet a parent who encourages their kids (no matter what their age) to laugh – even better that you do it as a family!
