5 BIG Reasons to Let Go of the Past.

Sometimes letting go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on. – Eckhart Tolle.

Letting go of the past and embracing the present continues to be the most rewarding experience of my life.

This is not an overnight task and may take be tough and challenging, but the results far outweigh the effort.

Maybe like me, it starts with you asking what baggage you’ve been carrying for a while.

Is it a relationship, a strong belief, a mistake made, an unfulfilled desire or lingering hurt? You see, knowing who or what you are allowing to live rent-free in your mind is half the battle won.

The second part of the journey entails releasing that monster, be it through replacing your thoughts, engaging in a physical activity or simply crying it out.

Whatever works best for you.

Whether you are thinking of beginning your letting-go-expedition or already in the midst of it, I am throwing some motivation your way.

Based on first hand experience, these are some incredible things that will happen to you when you let go of the past.

1. You will create space for something better in life

There is a reason why a particular relationship or job didn’t work out. It’s because there is something way better in store for you. The world is full of exciting opportunities, which you will never recognize if you are playing your past reel again and again.

There will be plenty of new experiences knocking at your door when you close the old one. How will you ever buy that new swanky car if you don’t want to give up the old rusty one?

2.  You will experience freedom like never before

Imagine carrying a heavy chest on your shoulder for a long time and one fine day, not having to do so anymore. Feel better already? Now you can walk freely, move forward, look around and enjoy life! This is especially true for attachment, which binds us down and makes us dependent.

On the other side of letting go, there is choice, independence, and free will.

3. You will feel a sense of accomplishment

This is when you overcome your self-imposed limitations and reach for the sky instead. It’s when you cross a big hurdle and emerge victorious. Overcoming an obstacle propels us to achieve greater heights. It makes us fulfil desires that are waiting in the pipeline for a long time.

When we are proud of our achievements, we become more confident of ourselves.

4. You will be better at bouncing back

You have been there and done that. Every time a new type of pain, hurt or rejection comes your way, you will know how to battle it. We all develop expectations for our lives and the people in them. It is inevitable that some things won’t turn out the way we want them to be.

But if you already know how to let go, life’s journey will become much simpler.

5. You will be more grateful

When you willingly release something from your life, you begin cherishing what you already have. I had an unfortunate divide with a close group of friends. Truth be told, I had taken them for granted. It was only after that, did I realize the importance of friendship. The process of letting go made me focus on other meaningful relationships that were already part of my life.

Besides making peace with the situation, I am now ever grateful for having the most amazing friends in my life!

Holding on to things can hamper us in so many ways, from anger to self-destructing behaviour. On the other hand, letting go means letting in happiness and success.

Love your post. It took me a long time to realize how toxic holding on to my past pain has been in my life. Every day I strive to let go of those things that no longer serve me and embrace the freedom of doing so.
